How Do You De-Winterize an RV?

De-winterizing a recreational vehicle (RV) is a multi-stage process that covers flushing antifreeze, sanitizing the freshwater system, inspecting seals and the roof, reactivating the LP gas system, and testing every major appliance before your first trip. Whether you winterized your own rig last fall or just purchased a unit that someone else winterized, the process is the same. 

This guide gives you a materials list and a numbered process in the order to complete it, so nothing gets missed.

What You’ll Need Before You Start

Gather everything on this list before you begin. Stopping mid-process to make a hardware store run breaks the sequence and can leave your water system in an incomplete state. Water system supplies:

  • White or blue drinking water hose rated to NSF/ANSI 61 standards. A standard green garden hose can leach lead, antimony, and other contaminants into potable water. This is not optional.
  • Water pressure regulator for campground hookup
  • Inline water filter rated to NSF/ANSI 42 or 53
  • Unscented liquid household bleach (5.25% to 8.25% sodium hypochlorite), per EPA drinking water disinfection guidelines
  • Replacement water filter cartridges

Inspection tools:

If You Just Purchased a Winterized RV

Buyers who inherit a winterized unit face extra uncertainty. You don’t know whether the previous owner used propylene glycol antifreeze or compressed air, and you don’t know when the freshwater tank was last sanitized. Default to the full antifreeze flush and sanitization sequence regardless. Treat the system as chemically treated until proven otherwise. 

Before starting, locate the water heater bypass valve in your owner’s manual, because its position varies by manufacturer. Step 1: Inspect the Exterior and Roof for Winter Damage

Start outside before you touch any switch or valve. Winter temperature cycling stresses every sealed surface on an RV, and finding damage before you activate systems tells you what needs repair before the first trip. RVs stored under covered storage tend to show less seal and membrane degradation at this stage, but every rig needs a physical walkthrough regardless, whether or not storing an RV outside was the right call for your situation last fall.

Work through the exterior in a consistent order: roof first, then slide-out seals, then windows and vents, then exterior compartment seals, then undercarriage. Don’t skip ahead. Water intrusion found at a window seal might trace back to a roof issue you haven’t reached yet.

Any evidence of water intrusion should be addressed before your first trip. Driving with an unsealed leak causes progressive structural damage. A soft spot in the wall or ceiling that feels spongy to the touch is not a cosmetic issue.

Roof and Membrane Inspection

Get on the roof with a flashlight and look at the full membrane surface. A healthy roof membrane is uniform in color, smooth or lightly textured, and firm underfoot without soft spots. Bubbling, lifted seams, or visible cracking in the membrane surface indicates either delamination or moisture intrusion underneath.

The two most common RV roof materials are EPDM (a rubber membrane) and TPO (a thermoplastic membrane). They require different cleaning products, so check your owner’s manual before applying anything. Using the wrong product on either membrane can accelerate deterioration.

Slide-Out Seals and Window Seals

Rubber seals that have been compressed at freezing temperatures for months are prone to cracking and compression set. Extend each slide-out fully, then run your hand slowly along the entire rubber seal perimeter on all four sides. You are looking for cracks, flaking rubber, gaps where light passes through, or sections where the seal no longer makes firm contact.

After inspection, apply a non-petroleum-based rubber seal conditioner to any seals that show early signs of drying. Do not use petroleum-based products. They degrade rubber over time.

For windows and roof vents, press gently around the seams and look for discoloration or soft areas in the surrounding wall material. Yellowed or soft material around a sealed edge usually means water has already been entering.

Step 2: Flush Antifreeze from the Water System

RV antifreeze uses propylene glycol as its active ingredient. Propylene glycol is non-toxic, but it still has to come out completely before the system is used for drinking or cooking. Running water through the lines until it runs clear removes the bulk of the antifreeze. It does not substitute for the sanitization step that follows.

If your RV was winterized with compressed air rather than antifreeze, skip to Step 3. Your system has no antifreeze to flush, but it still needs sanitization after months of sitting dry.

Follow this sequence in order:

  • Reinstall any water filter cartridges you removed for winter storage.
  • Keep the water heater in bypass mode for now. Flushing antifreeze through the heater tank wastes propylene glycol solution and adds unnecessary time. You will reinstate the heater in the next sub-step.
  • Connect to city water or fill your fresh tank.
  • Open every cold-water faucet inside the RV: kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and shower. Run each until the water flows completely clear with no pink tinge.
  • Repeat on all hot-water lines at every fixture.
  • Flush the toilet until the bowl runs clear.
  • Check any outdoor shower or external water connections and run those until clear as well.

Running clear is a visual minimum, not a finish line. The system still contains trace residue and months of stagnant conditions. Sanitization is the next step.

Reinstating the Water Heater

Locate the water heater bypass valve according to your owner’s manual. The bypass position and valve configuration vary by manufacturer, so the manual is not optional here. Once you have confirmed all antifreeze lines are flushed, switch the bypass valve to the normal operating position.

Let the tank fill completely before turning the heater on. Running a water heater with air still in the tank can damage the heating element. Turn on a hot-water faucet and let it run until a steady, uninterrupted stream flows. That confirms the tank is full and air has been purged. Check the anode rod condition if your unit has one. A heavily corroded or depleted anode rod should be replaced before the season starts.

If Your RV Was Winterized with Compressed Air

Air blowout winterization leaves no antifreeze in the lines. When you de-winterize, there is nothing to flush in the traditional sense. However, a water system that has sat dry and sealed for months still needs sanitization before use. Skip Step 2 and proceed directly to Step 3. The sanitization procedure is identical regardless of how the system was winterized.

Step 3: Sanitize the Freshwater System

Sanitizing the freshwater system is the most consequential step in the entire de-winterization process. A water system that sits dormant for months can harbor bacterial growth, including organisms in the same family as Legionella. RV antifreeze does not prevent this. Flushing removes the antifreeze. Sanitization addresses biological contamination.

This step is mandatory regardless of your winterization method and regardless of whether the water runs clear after flushing.

Follow this procedure in order:

  • Find your freshwater tank capacity in your owner’s manual.
  • Calculate the amount of bleach needed using the formula below.
  • Pre-mix the measured bleach in one gallon of clean water before adding it to the tank. This prevents concentrated bleach from contacting tank materials directly.
  • Add the pre-mixed solution to the tank, then fill the rest of the way with fresh water.
  • Open every faucet inside the RV: kitchen, bathroom, shower, and toilet. Run each until you can smell chlorine at that fixture. This confirms the sanitizing solution has reached every branch of the system.
  • Close all faucets and let the solution sit in the system for a minimum of 12 hours.
  • Drain the tank completely.
  • Refill with fresh water.
  • Flush all faucets again until no chlorine smell remains at any fixture.

How to Tell the Sanitization Is Complete

After the final flush, run each faucet and take a sniff. No chlorine smell, clear water, and no aftertaste are the three indicators that sanitization is complete. If you still detect chlorine after several full flushes, keep flushing with fresh water. A lingering smell means the water is not ready. It does not mean it is safe with the smell present.

Do not shorten the 12-hour dwell time to speed up the process. The contact time is what makes the procedure effective.

Using an Inline Water Filter After Sanitization

Once sanitization is complete and the system is flushed clean, install a fresh inline filter before your first campground water hookup. Two NSF/ANSI ratings are relevant here. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic filtration, primarily sediment and taste. NSF/ANSI 53 covers reduction of specific health-related contaminants including chlorine byproducts, lead, and certain organic compounds. Step 4: Reactivate the LP Gas System

Do not assume the LP gas system is intact after winter storage. Fittings can loosen over months of temperature cycling, rubber seals can dry out, and rodents can damage flexible hoses. Every LP gas appliance in your RV depends on this system: the furnace, water heater, stovetop, oven, and refrigerator if it operates in dual-fuel mode. Test the system before you light anything.

Follow this sequence in order:

  • Confirm that all appliance controls are in the OFF position before you open the tank valve.
  • Open the tank valve slowly, no more than one full turn. This allows pressure to equalize rather than surge through the system.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Test every connection from the tank regulator to each appliance using soapy water or a commercial leak detector spray. Apply the solution to each fitting and watch for bubbling.
  • If no bubbling is detected at any connection, proceed to light appliances one at a time. Start with the furnace, then the water heater, then the stovetop. This sequence purges air from the lines progressively.
  • Test the LP refrigerator mode last. After months of non-use, it may take several minutes to light once air has been purged from the lines.

Testing for LP Gas Leaks

Mix a small amount of dish soap with water in a cup or spray bottle. With the tank valve open one turn, apply the solution to every fitting in the system: the regulator connection at the tank, the hose connections at each appliance, and any inline fittings along the run. Watch each point for 15 to 20 seconds. Bubbling at any point means gas is escaping at that connection.

Commercial propane leak detector sprays are available at RV supply stores and are more sensitive than a soapy water solution. If you have access to one, use it. If you smell gas at any point, or if the soapy water test shows bubbling, close the tank valve immediately. Do not light any appliance. Ventilate the RV and contact an LP gas technician before proceeding.

Relighting Pilots After Winter Storage

Air trapped in the lines after months of non-use is normal. Pilots may require multiple ignition attempts before they light consistently. This is expected behavior, not a sign of a failed appliance.

Light the furnace first. Let it run through a complete cycle. Then light the water heater pilot and confirm it stays lit. Move to the stovetop and test each burner. If a burner requires four or five attempts before catching, that is the air purging from that branch of the system. Once it lights and holds a steady flame, the line is clear.

Step 5: Test All Appliances and Systems

Before you drive away, confirm that every major system works. Discovering a failed GFCI outlet or a slide-out that binds at home takes 20 minutes to address. Discovering the same problem at a campsite takes an afternoon and possibly a service call.

Work through this checklist in sequence:

Electrical:

  • Shore power connection and all outlets
  • GFCI outlets in the kitchen and bathroom (press the test and reset buttons)
  • Breaker panel for any tripped breakers
  • Interior and exterior lighting
  • 12V house battery charge level

LP gas appliances:

  • Furnace (confirmed in Step 4)
  • Water heater (confirmed in Step 4)
  • Stovetop and oven
  • Refrigerator on LP mode

Water system:

  • All indoor faucets on both hot and cold
  • Shower flow and drain
  • Toilet flush and fill
  • Water pump operation on tank water (disconnect city water supply, switch to pump, and confirm pressure at a faucet)

Slide-outs and awning:

  • Full extension and retraction of every slide-out, listening for binding or motor strain
  • Awning extension and retraction

Battery and Electrical Check

A 12V house battery that has sat in storage all winter needs more than a voltage check. Charge it to full first, then load-test it. A battery that drops below 10.5 volts under load should be replaced before the trip, not nursed through the season. Batteries stored in a discharged state below 80% state of charge over winter are often significantly degraded and may not recover full capacity even after charging.

Press the test button on each smoke detector and CO detector. Both should sound immediately. If either fails to sound, replace the battery first, then test again. If it still fails, replace the unit.

The LP gas detector deserves specific attention after a system reactivation. LP gas detectors are mounted low on the wall because propane is heavier than air and settles near the floor. Press the test button. If the unit doesn’t produce an audible alarm, replace it before using any propane appliance. Step 6: Inspect Tires, Brakes, and the Undercarriage

Static storage for a full winter season affects tires, brakes, and anything underneath the RV. Tires: Check tire pressure cold, before driving, against the placard on the vehicle door frame or entry door area. Do not inflate to the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Those are different numbers, and the placard is the correct reference. Inspect each sidewall for fine surface cracking in the rubber, often called weatherchecking or ozone cracking. RVs stored stationary for a full winter season can develop flat spots. Drive slowly for the first few miles and see if they resolve. If flat spots persist beyond 50 miles, have the tires inspected.

Brakes: On towable RVs, test the brake controller settings and the breakaway switch battery before the first tow. On motorhomes, test the brakes at low speed in a safe, open area before taking the rig onto a highway.

Tire Pressure and Sidewall Inspection

Check pressure with a quality gauge before the RV has moved. Tires cool to ambient temperature overnight, and a cold reading is the accurate baseline. If any tire is significantly low, inflate to the placard specification, not higher.

Ozone cracking appears as fine lines across the sidewall rubber, often running perpendicular to the tread direction. It is caused by UV exposure and atmospheric ozone over time. Surface weatherchecking in the outer rubber layer can be minor. Deep cracks that extend toward the cords are not minor. When in doubt, get a tire specialist to evaluate the affected tire before the season starts.

Checking for Rodent Damage

Rodents that enter an RV during storage chew wiring, insulation, and hoses. They are one of the most common causes of spring startup problems that have nothing to do with winterization. Check the engine compartment wiring looms on motorhomes, brake line connections, and any accessible undercarriage hoses.

Inside the RV, open base cabinets and look for droppings or chew marks on cabinet corners and wiring runs. Any chewed electrical wiring must be repaired by a technician before the RV is driven.
